September / October 2009 :: Fan of the Month :: Eric Fleck

If there ever were an unlikely Cowboys fan, it might be this guy right here.

What’s most unusual isn’t his zip code, he lives in Germany, but rather how he came to love the Dallas Cowboys.

You see, not having a football background, Eric Fleck first found a passion for Dallas, Texas not through a football game, but from his TV set. Glued to the weekly TV series that shares the same name as this sacred city, Fleck religiously followed the questionable business practices and familial dramatics of J.R. and the rest of the Ewing family and their now landmarked Texas ranch, from thousands of miles away.

From that birthed a passion for the city of Dallas and a twenty-year love affair for its’ beloved Cowboys.

Ironically enough, Eric’s favor for Dallas could have just as easily been handed to another NFC East team.

The growing popularity of pay-per-view television in the early 1990’s brought him his first chance to watch an NFL game from Germany – in Super Bowl XXVI – a game that was won by the Washington Redskins 37-24 (over Buffalo). As fate would have it, his cable receiver was inoperable come game time and the rest, as they say, is history.

His first Cowboys experience and his first Corral experience were synonymous. In 2002, he ventured to the city for the Cowboys bout with the Carolina Panthers. He recalls the experience:

My first time in Dallas was great. I met a group of nice people and had a lot of fun. That day at Texas Stadium was impressive, standing in that all-blue arena, looking at those five championship banners hanging from the roof. (I was) Asking myself why I did not make that trip a few years earlier. I will always remember that game against Carolina. The boys turned a poor game and a 13-0 deficit into a 13-14 last minute win.

Since leaving Dallas that weekend, Eric has returned twice, once in 2004 and once in 2006. When asked about the Cowboys Corral, he confesses that his favorite thing about us is “spending a whole weekend with other fans and sharing more than just a ball game.”

Eric will enjoy more face time with die-hard Cowboys fans this November when he returns to Dallas to watch the ‘Boys and his favorite current player, Marion Barber, obliterate the Seattle Seahawks.
